Sinkable... (Full Steam Ahead!)

October 14, 2013
by Mike Lachance

What's ahead for the City of Lewiston? Most taxpayers and wage earners in our city have voiced concern for the scenario caricaturized above, including this correspondent. We have a serious problem. I have held the position that property taxes are too high and welfare is draining our limited resources. What can we do?

Property taxes must be lowered (see article from Oct. 10) and municipal dollars going to welfare in all forms must be examined and re-structured. A system of checks and balances must be implemented not to eliminate welfare, but to discourage its misuse or abuse. Currently being brushed under the rug are countless first-hand stories, relayed by many whose day-to-day jobs involve a behind the scenes look at the raw underbelly of Lewistons welfare abuse sub-culture. The stories are real. The players unashamed, unabashed and uninhibited. The true victims of Lewiston's welfare crisis are the citizens who truly require social services, and the taxpayers who are being fleeced by a system so broken that any chance of sustainability is at best a naive dream.

The table is before us. We must clear it of more trivial issues and place our most urgent economic challenges front and center for all to see. We can no longer afford to hide from the truth. Reality lay dead-ahead for Lewiston. If we continue to hide from reality with a blind eye we will sink quickly.

(If nothing else, can we at least get in an order for more lifeboats?)

It is my intention to work respectfully (where due) to bring these issues to light; continuing to help those who truly cannot help themselves, while discouraging those who are knowingly conspiring to abuse our social services system from remaining in Lewiston. Will anyone else stand up for this?
